About the lab
BoxOfChocolates.ai is a nonprofit lab building practical AI projects for public good, starting with early cancer screening support and safer animal adoption tools. It is the organizational home for independently bounded initiatives in health and animal welfare.
Why “a box of chocolates”?
The name reflects a portfolio of distinct experiments. Each project starts with a different problem, audience, and path to usefulness. The projects share a home and a set of principles, but they do not automatically share data, maturity, technical architecture, or decision authority. That separation lets the lab explore broadly while setting safeguards appropriate to each domain.
How we work
We begin with a concrete public need, establish who the tool is for, and define what AI should and should not do. We favor narrow tools whose evidence and limitations can be explained. Projects should preserve provenance, uncertainty, privacy, and meaningful human review. AI supports people; it does not replace clinicians, shelter professionals, or other accountable decision-makers.
Current initiatives
- fcancer.ai is early-stage research into AI-assisted MRI screening support. It is not medical diagnosis.
- GuardDog is decision-support screening for verified shelters and rescues. It is not a blacklist, consumer background-check service, or automatic adoption-decision engine.
Organization
BoxOfChocolates.ai is currently formalizing its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and governance structure. This site does not claim that federal tax-exempt status has already been granted. Founding-board and governance information will be published when it is ready.
